The new Labour government – An opportunity for change for people with learning disabilities and autistic people

ARC England congratulates Labour on its election victory and welcomes the opportunity for change for people with learning disabilities and autistic people. We are ready as part of the Care Provider Alliance to work collaboratively to effect positive change.

The election results may suggest significant, even dramatic, change is coming. However, with social care featuring so infrequently in campaigns and manifestos and with the support needs of people a learning disability and autistic people all but invisible, here at ARC, we are not expecting positive change to come soon.

We will continue to work with our members to secure fair and sustainable funding for learning disability and autism services so that the workers who are keeping services going are paid properly for what they do.

We and our members will work constructively with the new Government to bring to an end the scandal of over 2000 people with a learning disability and autistic people who remain in settings that, for the vast majority, are entirely wrong for them and in many cases, are causing them harm.
