The management of medicines sits under the ‘Safe’ key line of enquiry (KLOE) regulated by the CQC and remains the biggest area of non-compliance.

All social care staff need to undertake medication training and to have their knowledge and capability regularly reviewed.

ARC England’s Supporting Medication in Social Care Settings for Trainers will enable you to deliver mandatory medication training to new and existing staff members. The training will equip you to ensure your staff support service users competently and consistently.  Once trained, your staff can then complete our workbooks and have them formally assessed to provide your organisation with external quality assurance.

You will receive:

• a trainers’ pack, including a USB with all handouts and PowerPoint presentation
• a sample workbook
• an additional 30 minutes of personal support from your tutor, with the opportunity to ask questions and discuss your organisation’s specific requirements.
• a certificate of attendance

Who should do the course?

This course is aimed at people who are already competent trainers wanting to deliver our updated Supporting Medication in Social Care Settings course materials to the staff within their organisation.

Please note, this trainers’ workshop is only suitable for employees of social care providers.

Learning Delivery and Duration

The four hour workshop is delivered online via Zoom and broken into two sessions of two hours duration, with an additional thirty minutes’ personal support from your tutor (to be accessed within 2 weeks of completing your training with us).

Course Content

The training is values-led and equips you to deliver the ‘Supporting Medication’ course to front-line staff.
The course covers the following:

• The legislative framework relevant to the support and administration of medication in social care settings.
• Roles and responsibilities in supporting the use of medication in social care settings.
• The common types of medication and their use.
• Techniques for administering medication.
• The process for receiving, storing and disposing of medication supplies safely.
• How to promote the rights of the individual and support the use of medication.
• How to record and report on use of medication.

Additional applications of course knowledge
The Supporting Medication course has been written to cover the knowledge needed to complete the following parts of the City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care:

• City & Guilds Unit 343 Support the Use of Medication in Adult Care, OR
• City & Guilds Unit 344 Administer Medication to Individuals & Monitor the Effects.

The course also covers the knowledge aspects of the NOS (National Occupational Standards) SCDHSC3122 and SFHCHS3.

Assessment
This trainers’ course is not formally assessed. However, when you go on to deliver Supporting Medication in Social Care Settings training, each of your learners will need to complete the Supporting Medication in Social Care Settings workbook and return it to ARC for assessment by a qualified assessor.

Cost: £200 for ARC Members/£250 non-members

Workbooks
Workbooks can be purchased separately by organisations that have completed this updated Supporting Medication in Social Care Settings for Trainers and are delivering our new materials to their staff.

The workbooks are returned to ARC for assessment by a qualified assessor. Each learner will receive assessment feedback and, if knowledge is demonstrated, certification of the course. If the learner then goes on to complete the City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care, this certificate and feedback can be presented by the learner to their assessor as part of the units 343 Support the Use of Medication in Adult Care or 344 Administer Medication to Individuals and Monitor the Effects.

Workbooks cost £19 each (ARC members) and £23 each (non-members).
