Active Support is an evidence-based model of support that shows staff how to support people with learning disabilities and behaviour that challenges to be more engaged and included in everyday activities that make up ‘an ordinary life’. As a person-centred approach Active Support promotes inclusion; independence and choice in everyday activities; improves staff team confidence and morale; turns person centred support into person centred action and supports services to show quality of life outcomes.

This programme is for both Senior Managers and Support Staff as adopting Active Support is an organisational wide approach.

By the end of this programme learners will:

  • Understand the values of Active Support, its proven benefits and potential benefits for organisations
  • Learn how to provide support that promotes participation and engagement, and examine their current practice
  • Fully understand Active Support and Person Centred Planning
  • Understand how to practice manage Active Support – what does it mean?

This full day workshop is for Registered Managers, Team Leaders and senior support staff. It covers in-depth how to plan and carry out effective assessment in the workplace and accurate recording of the competency components of the Care Certificate.

  • Be able to identify which of the 15 standards require observation
  • Learn how to plan observations and assessments in the workplace
  • Establish useful assessment methods and how to make assessment decisions

This workshop is for front line staff supporting people with learning disabilities. It will help them to understand the basic principles and practice of risk assessment. The workshops take a values led approach to positive risk management, underlining the importance of taking sensitively managed risk as a human rights issue and as a prime learning tool.

Accredited Fire Safety Awareness Workshop

This half-day workshop aims to equip individuals with the skills and confidence to prevent and handle fires within the workplace, thus maintaining a safe environment for all. This HABC accredited workshop addresses your legal obligations, induction, refresher, vocational and management training needs, and meeting the requirements of the Care Certificate.

Food Safety Awareness Workshop

Social Care workers have a role in the nutritional wellbeing of people who need care and support through the delivery of direct care, catering or domestic duties. For CQC regulated providers, ensuring the appropriate food safety training is provided helps comply with their expectations around national standards for induction.

This half-day workshop will not only help providers to meet these needs but can also serve as a useful refresher, ensuring that staff are adequately trained at all times.

Emergency First Aid at Work (Level 2)

The Emergency First Aid at Work course is compliant with the Health and Safety (First Aid) regulations, 1981. Following this course, attendees will be equipped with the basic life saving skills needed to manage emergency first aid situations and prevent them from becoming worse until professional help arrives.  Incorporating both theory and practical activities, this full-day workshop can be tailored to meet individual needs.

The intensive full-day workshop will include:

  • First Aid priorities
  • Managing incidents
  • Basic life support
  • Examination of a casualty
  • Unconsciousness
  • Control of bleeding
  • Burns and scalds
  • Regulations
  • First Aid kits
  • Recording and reporting

Certification is dependent on successful continuous assessment of the student, and final exam at the end of the day. Each qualification is valid for three years.*

*Under the current guidelines it is strongly recommended that first aid trained staff attend a half-day update every twelve months. The Basic Life Support workshop fulfils this criterion.

Prevalence of epilepsy is estimated to lie between 15% and 30% among people with learning disabilities.
Seizures can be unpredictable and quick, effective treatment can be lifesaving. Beyond seizures, epilepsy can have a profound impact on the lives of sufferers, leaving them in need of emotional as well as practical support and often being reliant on additional medications.

This half-day training course aims to increase theoretical and practical knowledge to enable those attending to effectively manage epilepsy.

At the end of the course, attendees will be able to:

Define relevant terminology
Describe the main causes of epilepsy
Describe the main types epilepsy
List the common triggers of seizures
Consider the risks and benefits of common anti-epileptic drugs
Know what to do in the event of a seizure
Explain the importance of keeping accurate records

Through a series of discussion, activities and case studies, this module will help managers to understand the features of effective team performance, how to deal with common challenges and how to develop and implement a plan to ensure all team members meet joint objectives.

Delivering Quality Social Care Services

This module explores the key areas related to the delivery of quality social care services including the process of planning and achieving positive outcomes that underpin the personalisation agenda.  It aims to provide an opportunity to enhance knowledge, learning and discuss good practice initiatives in understanding the following:

To understand the principles and values that underpin outcomes based and person centred practice
Be able to lead practice that promotes social, emotional, cultural, spiritual and intellectual well-being
To understand the current legal and policy context in relation to quality issues and the key aspects of quality in Social Care

Mate Crime is what happens when people in vulnerable situations are abused or exploited by people they think of as friends. ARC’s ‘Safety Net’ project was the first in the UK to identify mate crime and spent three years raising awareness, developing resources and training a wide variety of professionals and people with learning disabilities.

We have the answer: a comprehensive training course which covers all of the knowledge Learning Outcomes of the Qualification Unit HSC3047 ‘Principles of support for use of medication in health and social care settings’.

Train the Trainer Course information:

This is a one-day course that will be delivered by our experienced trainer.

The course covers all of the knowledge Learning Outcomes of Unit HSC3047 ‘Principles of support for use of medication in health and social care settings’. The course will take you through the learning outcomes in a fun and interactive way. There will be presentations, activities/exercises, individual, pairs and group work all to enable you to gain the knowledge and understanding for this unit.

This one-day course is aimed at people who are already competent trainers and would like to deliver our ‘Supporting Medication’ course to their staff to promote competency and consistency with medication management.

This Train the Trainer course takes your trainer through the ‘Supporting Medication’ course material giving them additional information and advice about how to deliver the course.

On completion of the course the trainer will be equipped to deliver the ‘Supporting Medication’ course to your staff which is written in line with the Knowledge Learning Outcomes of the QCF unit HSC 3047 ‘Support use of medication in social care setting’.

A one-day delivered course providing information to help staff understand the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and their implementation throughout the social care sector.

The training course is aimed at predominately front line staff, however, we can also provide training for managers upon request.

People with learning disabilities are thought to self-harm at roughly double the rate of the general population. It is being reported to ARC as a growing concern with providers seeing rises in the number of people who self-harm, combined with staff lacking the confidence and skills to deal with the issue.

To support our members, and others, ARC has designed a one-day workshop on self-harm, drawing on the research project ‘Hidden Pain – Self-Harm and People with Learning Disabilities’ which was jointly conducted by Self injury Support (formerly Bristol Crisis Service for Women) and the Norah Fry Research Centre at the University of Bristol, and from interviews with people with learning disabilities who self-harm.

Our Self-harm and People with Learning Disabilities workshop is aimed at all staff and managers working with people who do, or may, self-harm, (much self-harm is hidden), and covers:

  • What is self-harm?
  • Types of self-harm/self injury
  • Reasons for self-harm
  • Responses to self-harm
  • Communication with people who self-harm
  • Identification and prevention
  • Self-management
  • Top tips.

The workshop is highly interactive and we ask that learners bring their own professional experiences to the day. Much of the day is spent in discussion groups prompted by the stories of people with learning disabilities who self-harm. There is also an opportunity for skills development with an emphasis on communication skills as the major tool for managing and preventing self-harm.

Learners are encouraged to prepare some work in advance of the workshop, conducting a short service audit and analysing how they currently communicate with people they support who self-harm. This work should not take more than 2–3 hours.

Learners are also encouraged to complete a full service audit and make service recommendations following their attendance at the workshop.

There are an estimated 220,00 people with learning disabilities from ethnic minority backgrounds. Furthermore, 25% of new entrants to adult learning disability services could come from ethnic minority backgrounds. These figures are not reflected in most learning disability service providers.
ARC has designed this Understanding Diversity workshop to build upon these findings.

The Understanding Diversity workshop will cover:
Individual identity
What is culture?
What is diversity?
How to avoid prejudice
How to work in a culturally competent manner
How to engage with communities
How to adapt practices to make them appropriate for everyone
Individual exercises and group work
Forward planning exercises
Those attending will be informed of a variety of sources of help to support good practice and also will gain an understanding of legal requirements and relevant laws and government policies.

The course content is designed to be flexible, addressing needs and interests of those attending to aid their learning.

Completion of this workshop will help the attendees support people from a diverse range of backgrounds in an appropriate way, meeting an important element of the new commissioning structure.  The workshop will also support staff working to achieve their Care Certificate by covering part of the knowledge requirements for the Equality and Diversity standard.

The concepts of loss and bereavement and how they affect people with learning disabilities can be anxiety-provoking subjects for support staff.  There is good evidence that people with a learning disability are particularly vulnerable to its effects.  We are therefore pleased to be offering a new one-day course to give staff more confidence to identify grief and unresolved loss, and the opportunity to discuss practical solutions to support people who are grieving.
